Still here doing my vegan thing…

So, it’s been a while and I have to say that nothing much has changed. I’m still eating my way through plenty of tasty vegan food and trying anything new that I can. I’m also still going to the gym and aiming for 4 classes over 3 days a week. I can’t say that I’ve learned to love it yet but I definitely feel better for going (afterwards!) The other thing which helps me to stay focused is that I’ve found that even missing a week puts you almost back to square one as far as the DOMS are concerned so it’s a case of keeping at it and waiting for it to become an automatic part of my routine.

One thing that has happened is that I’ve discovered Slimming World. This was more out of necessity as I’ve realised that I need a little bit of structure in my diet to keep me in check. I find that the Slimming World way of eating lends itself very well to a vegan diet so I can stick to it pretty easily during the day. My issue is when I get home from work and suddenly the 15 syns that I’m allowed doesn’t seem to be enough! I’m trying to treat it like a maths puzzle (not that I was ever a particular fan of maths but I find that making it a challenge helps!) in that I think of what I want to eat then try to fit the syns in to 15 per day. Sometimes I go slightly over but that’s okay apparently which suits me fine!

I’m also currently taking advantage of a free trial of the premium version of My Fitness Pal which is an app I’ve used for the last few years to log my food and exercise. The trial only started last night and I have to say that so far I haven’t felt wowed by it. I think I need to spend a bit of time really looking at what I’ve gained by upgrading before the time comes to put my money where my mouth is and subscribe. I’m not against the idea of paying for it- as a long term user I know that I will stick with it- it’s just whether I can justify paying for something that I’ve lived with for free for such a long time. Time will tell I guess but I only have 14 days so the clock is ticking…

    • I would say that you shouldn’t try to replace things you used to eat and should judge new foods on their own merits. I think my taste buds have definitely changed over time as I now like some vegan cheeses but I hated them all at first. I would find a few recipes that you like and are easy to make so that you can always fall back on them. Remember your reasons for making the change and stick with it- I’m doing it for the animals and if your reason is strong enough it will make it easier to keep going. Also, there are loads of treats that are accidentally vegan so it’s good to find a few that you like so that you don’t feel like you’re depriving yourself of anything.
